God sent Trump to save Israel, Pompeo suggests

Earlier in the day, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif has expressed the position of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states, condemning the Trump's statement on the necessity to fully recognise Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

"The Golan was and will remain Arab and Syrian", the source said.

"Changing the status of the Golan Heights by bypassing the Security Council a direct violation of United Nations decisions", Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said.

The global community on Friday expressed concern over U.S. President Donald Trump's unexpected announcement on the necessity to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights.

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said Trump's announcement has brought the region "to the brink of a new crisis and new tensions".

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Thursday that the Iran-backed Houthi militias can not win in Yemen.

While President Trump's tweet does not officially change US policy, it does signal a greater possibility of seeing the policy changed either through Congress or an official presidential declaration.

In his tweet, Trump said the Golan was "of critical strategic and security importance to the State of Israel and Regional Stability!"

He pointed out that the visit of US Secretary of State Mark Pompeo accompanied by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Al-Buraq Wall, also known as the Western Wall, is part of these violations.

Trump's statement came while Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was in Jerusalem, becoming the highest-ranking US official ever to visit the contested Western Wall in the holy city of Jerusalem accompanied by an Israeli leader.

It follows the US recognition in December 2017 of Jerusalem as Israel's capital - a decision that also stirred worldwide criticism as the city's disputed status remains at the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights", Netanyahu tweeted. "President Trump made a bold decision".

And Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said in a tweet that USA legitimisation of Israel's actions "will only lead to more violence and pain".

From Israel, Pompeo's plane travelled through Cypriot airspace, as Lebanon, which is technically in a state of war with Israel, bans direct flights from Israel. "We are deeply grateful for the USA support".

Analysts say the move draws a red line and sends a strong signal to Iran that the USA stands with Israel on the Golan Heights. Pompeo told reporters the change in terminology was not accidental but rather a reflection of the reality on the ground that the Jewish state controlled the territory.

But they did not appear to quell behind-the-scenes security contacts developed in recent years between Israel and U.S. Gulf allies, with Washington's urging, over their common enemy Iran, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

"He [Trump] is clearly doing this to help his friend Benjamin Netanyahu with his really hard re-election campaign amid allegations of corruption", Jim Jatras, a former USA diplomat, told RT. There have been numerous battles over the land during the eight-year Syrian Civil War.

US officials are preparing an official document that would recognize the Golan Heights as a sovereign Israeli territory, which US President Donald Trump is likely to sign next week, Reuters reported on Friday. "Until then, premature U.S. recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the Golan is a needlessly provocative move that violates global law and does not enhance Israeli security".

According to the report, Trump's Middle East peace negotiators and the State Department were also surprised by the move, with U.S. officials having expected an announcement when Trump hosts Netanyahu at the White House next week.

But Washington goes its way recognizing the Golan after its previous stunt with moving the United States embassy to Jerusalem.

Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi said lasting peace in the region requires Israel to withdraw from all Arab territories it occupies, including the Golan. The Palestinians have already severed ties with the US over Washington's Jerusalem policies.

Trump's recognition of Israel's claim to Jerusalem and the relocation of the U.S. embassy to the contested city, a break with decades of U.S. Middle East policy, ignited worldwide criticism. But Trump said his decision was a long time coming and it wasn't about Netanyahu and Israeli politics.

Near the end of Pompeo's visit to Israel, Trump tweeted out his surprise.

Hizbullah's Al-Manar TV aired the comments made by Bassil live, but cut back to normal programming once Pompeo began reading his statement. Huawei is a major competitor in that market, and the USA has been warning that they consider doing business with the major Chinese telecom unacceptable.
