Tesla Model 3 Starting Price Drops

At the same time, Musk announced that the company will close many of its stores and begin selling entirely online and revealed details of Tesla's upcoming Full Self-Driving system.

The cut in retail stores is created to increase demand for Tesla vehicles - which many believe has been waning - and to cut overhead costs.

The electric-car and solar-panel company will close many of its stores, but leave some open as galleries or "information centers" in high-traffic areas.

As for the bad news, Tesla is moving all sales of its cars online.

The firm managed to scrape a profit in the final two quarters of 2018, but expects to post a loss for the first three months of this year, Mr Musk said.

The lower price could expand the Model 3 market by about 600,000 cars in the United States alone, based on historical sales figures for similarly priced sedans, Baird analyst Ben Kalo wrote in a note to clients.

For existing Tesla customers, maintenance would shift to mobile fix crews. By building only more expensive versions for more than a year, Tesla made sure that customers waiting for the base model now see exactly what they'd be missing out on, rather than being excited about the vehicle being available within their budget. The answer: people who understand civilization could easily collapse if climate change is not addressed in a timely fashion, and people who want the best vehicle ever made by many accounts.

Even Musk seemed a little apprehensive on a conference call with reporters Thursday.

Tesla has finally launched the $35,000 Model 3. A Model 3 owner could sell/trade it back to Tesla, or the owner can add their vehicle to the Tesla taxi fleet and share the revenue with Tesla.

Karl Brauer, executive publisher at Kelley Blue Book and Autotrader, said in an emailed statement that the lower price "along with the new flexible online ordering process, should substantially widen the Model 3's appeal". But customers who reserved the Model 3 at that lower price have waited almost three years since Musk first promised it.

"Meaning the auto will be able to find you in a parking lot, pick you up, take you all the way to your destination without an intervention this year".

Tesla is making major announcements right now - some good, some bad.

"Electric vehicles now make up only about 2 per cent of global sales, and while we believe that number is likely to grow, we believe there is an education process that is crucial for new customers around charging, range, and other features that are unique to Tesla that will not be as readily available without the in-store experience".

The store closures will come on top of a decision to cut 3,150 jobs, or about 7% of Tesla's workforce, announced in January. Tesla says the standard model and the Standard Range Plus have battery packs with fewer cells rather than being limited by a software lock. The vehicle doesn't come with Tesla's full Autopilot driver assistance systems, but Musk said buyers will be able to upgrade their cars at a later date. As for test drives, Tesla will offer buyers a seven day, or 1,000 miles, return period after taking delivery.

As part of the settlement, Musk stepped down from his chairmanship role and he and Tesla agreed to pay $US20 million each in fines.
