One case of measles confirmed in Bell County

Clark County Public Health's latest report on the ongoing measles outbreak shows 50 total confirmed cases.

The health department said they are taking all precautionary measures to prevent the disease from spreading with five measles cases reported in Harris, Montgomery and Galveston country earlier this week.

Public Health said vaccine-related rashes do not make people contagious.

The city of Houston has not reported any measles cases in 2019.

The United States is now facing not one but three measles outbreaks, and once again the main culprit is people's refusal to get vaccinated.

Officials say those people were in close contact with the only other person confirmed to have the measles in Multnomah County. Three more possible exposure sites were also identified in Vancouver, Washington, on Wednesday, leading to the possibility of more cases.

"The picture for 2018 makes it clear that the current pace of progress in raising immunization rates will be insufficient to stop measles circulation". The CDC says measles are more likely to spread in areas with "pockets of unvaccinated people". The measles vaccine is reported to be very effective; 97 percent of those who receive both vaccinations are immune.

Measles is a highly contagious and potentially unsafe viral illness that is transmitted through coughing and sneezing. Measles starts with fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and sore throat followed by a rash that spreads over the body.

"While this is a relatively small number of cases, it's a good time to make sure you and your children have gotten the recommended two doses of measles vaccine", Van Deusen said.

"If you feel like you're experiencing symptoms and signs of a measles infection, contact your health provider", Marlow said.

Dr. Patrick Ludke says people in OR are at risk because the vaccination rate is not as good as it could be for measles. Your best protection is the MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine.
