Desert Classic: Phil Mickelson leads after Round 2

Desert Classic: Phil Mickelson leads after Round 2

Some days you have those days where it just clicked.

"I was aware of it", Mickelson said. Hadwin had a 66 at La Quinta, the course where he shot 59 two years ago.

The tournament is played out over three courses during its four days with La Quinta considered the easiest of them. "The last thing is speed, because if I have speed with the driver then I can worry more about accuracy".

"It's very hard to start a round and go low like this and then follow it up because the expectations are that anything short of a victory is a failure", Mickelson said.

RIGHT: Luck's round of 64 left him four back of Mickelson at the Desert Classic in California.

Marino had a hole-in-one on the seventh hole at La Quinta in a 65.

Mickelson, who has been a professional for 27 years, equaled his lowest career score with his 12-under round of 60 which included four birds in the first five holes.

Australian Curtis Luck sits in sole possession of second place following a six-under-par 66 on day two of the PGA Tour tournament.

After a par at 15, He kept his hopes of a 59 alive with his ninth birdie of the day at 16, but he mis-read a good chance on the penultimate hole before capping a remarkable round in style at the last, knocking his approach to eight feet and rolling in the chance to claim a three-shot lead over the field.

Mickelson set off down the back nine with birdies on the eleventh and twelfth before a bit of bad luck on the 18th saw him end up in the water and card a double-bogey.

"That was an interesting shot because I could have easily lost one and I ended up picking one up", he said. "So we thought it was in, but it wasn't like a hundred percent sure and luckily we went up there and it was in the hole". It was a fun day.

"Once I got going I felt like I played really well", said Rose.

Top-ranked Justin Rose was tied for 28th at 8 under after a 68 on the Nicklaus layout.

One of my predictions for 2019 is that Phil Mickelson would fall out of the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings for the first time in 25 years. Henderson has had at least a share of the 36-hole lead in five of her seven victories.

Richard Sterne is the only player within four strokes of Lowry after a round of 69.
