China warns state firms to avoid travel to U.S

The court said Schellenberg had conspired with others in an attempt to smuggle 222 kg of methamphetamine from China to Australia in 2014.

A still image taken from CCTV video shows Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg in court, where he was sentenced to death for drug smuggling, in Dalian, Liaoning province, China Jan. 14, 2019.

"Everything about Robert Lloyd Schellenberg's case screams retaliatory and arbitrary, from the odd step for China of inviting foreign media to his appeal hearing to the nearly immediate announcement of his capital sentencing", Caster said Tuesday.

In response to questions from reporters on Tuesday, Freeland said that she has met twice with China's ambassador to Canada about the decision on Monday to up the sentence imposed on Robert Schellenberg, who was sentenced to 15 years in a Chinese prison for drug smuggling but received the death sentence following his appeal of that ruling.

Canada detained Meng Wanzhou, chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, on December 1 at the request of the United States. It came in the wake of the death sentence handed to Robert Lloyd Schellenberg during a one-day retrial in the city of Dalian.

It new government warning urged Chinese citizens to consider their personal circumstances and "fully assess the risks of going to Canada for tourism".

She repeated threats of "serious consequences" for Canada if Ms. Meng is not released.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he is extremely concerned that China has chosen to "arbitrarily" apply the death penalty against a Canadian.

"We should draw the conclusion that the Chinese government very obviously wants us to draw: this is a political case, and Schellenberg's fate will have nothing to do with his individual guilt or innocence".

But China responded on Tuesday with a travel warning, saying a Chinese citizen has recently been "arbitrarily detained by law enforcement authorities because of a request by a third country". She called on the Canadian government to release Meng.

Canada has asked China's ambassador to Canada for clemency in Schellenberg's case, said Freeland, adding that she had "a very emotional conversation" with Schellenberg's father on Monday. But within weeks of Meng's December 1 arrest, an appeals court suddenly reversed that decision, saying the sentence was too lenient, and scheduled Monday's retrial with just four days' notice. He was sentenced in 2018, according to the Globe and Mail.

The court said it found that Schellenberg was involved in an global drug-smuggling operation and was recruited to help smuggle more than 220 kilograms (485 pounds) of methamphetamine from a warehouse in the Chinese city of Dalian to Australia.

"This really hurts China" and its efforts to promote its influence around the world, said David Zweig, a Canadian who directs the Center on China's Transnational Relations at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

Ms Meng, who is the daughter of Huawei's founder, is accused in the USA of using a subsidiary of the company called Skycom to evade sanctions on Iran between 2009 and 2014.

"I have no idea as to if, and when, the case will get to the Supreme People's Court, as the timetable is so clearly governed by extra-judicial concerns".

Chinese President Xi Jinping gestures to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau ahead of their meeting at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on August 31, 2016.

Observers say that Mr. Schellenberg may have become a bargaining chip in a nasty back-and-forth between China and the United States.

"The decision to travel is your choice and you are responsible for your personal safety overseas", said the Government of Canada.

Former diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor face accusations of harming national security.

Hua on Monday denied Kovrig was eligible for diplomatic immunity as Trudeau has maintained.

"Anyone with normal judgment can see that the Meng Wanzhou case is not a normal legal case, and the detention of Meng Wanzhou is not just".
