White House ordered shocking request for potential attack on Iran

Current and former U.S. officials reportedly told the Journal that the request also prompted broader worries at the Pentagon and State Department, though the Pentagon did develop the military options as requested, according to the report.

Although the Pentagon obeyed the request by the council, the report said, it is unknown whether or not the plans for striking Iran were ever fully developed or even provided to the White House.

The decision was prompted by three mortars being fired into a diplomatic quarter in Baghdad in September, the newspaper said. The three mortars, however, landed in an open lot and nobody was harmed in the attack.

It's not true that the state Department and the Pentagon had been caught off guard by the request, he said of the dpa. This request was reportedly met with "shock" and "concern" in the Pentagon.

There was also an air strike near a USA diplomatic facility in Basra, Iraq.

While it is unclear if the proposals were eventually sent to the White House or if the president knew of the plans, Bolton's request anxious many in the Pentagon and the State Department concerned with the more hawkish approach toward Tehran.

"The Department of Defense is a planning organization and provides the president military options for a variety of threats", Colonel Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman, told AFP.

In talks with other administration officials, Bolton has made it clear he personally supports regime change in Iran, a position he championed before joining Trump's administration, people familiar with the discussions said.

According to the paper, Mira Ricardel, the former deputy national security adviser, described the attack on the United States embassy in Iraq as "an act of war", and said that the USA needed to respond accordingly.

Notably, since Bolton took office, he has emphasized a more aggressive approach to Iran.

Washington withdrew from the Iran nuclear deal in May past year and re-imposed batches of sanctions on Tehran.

Pompeo told Fox News that dozens of countries would attend the summit which would aim to "build out the global coalition" opposed to Iranian policies in the region.
