Female sex toy firm slams CES for gender bias after losing award

If CES is endorsing gender bias and misogyny, it needs to change the way it operates!

The CES 2019 gadget show is revving up in Las Vegas. Lora Haddock, the CEO of Lora DiCarlo, says that makes for a double standard at the tech show already under fire for not including enough women.

Speaking of the general public, they are not allowed into the show.

Among the innovations at this year's get-together, run by the Consumer Technology Association (CTA), are an augmented strip club complete with virtual pole dancers and a "personal massager" you can operate from your smart watch. The organizers behind CES revoked the award, citing the product as "immoral, obscene, indecent, profane or not in keeping with CTA's image".

Its maker, the startup Lora DiCarlo, was also banned from exhibiting on the show floor (though it's in Las Vegas at a separate media event).

CTA Deputy General Counsel Kara Maser acknowledged Lora DiCarlo's frustration, but affirmed the product's ineligibility, "even if your submission was mistakenly allowed in the first instance".

"The product does not fit into any of our existing product categories and should not have been accepted for the Innovation Awards Program", a CES spokeswoman said in an e-mail statement on Tuesday.

The market for sex products such as vibrators and lubricant is projected to grow to $37.2 billion globally by the year 2022, according to British sex toy retailer MysteryVibe.

TechCrunch reports that CES has also banned DiCarlo from exhibiting at CES.

Apple has long made plenty of noise about its stance on privacy, with the way competing companies vacuum up our data something the Cupertino tech giant is never shy of pointing out.

Furthermore, the presence of women at the tradeshow is relatively less, be it female-focussed products or female presenters.

Haddock writes that sex positivity and inclusion is at the heard of her startup, that they don't hide what they do and they believe all women should be able to vocally claim a space in the pleasure tech sector, which is still heavily dominated by male executives and CEOs. However, the organisers later backtracked and mentioned the product didn't fit in any category, be it robotics or drones.
