Djokovic Beats Anderson, Claims Mubadala Championship Title

The Serbian tennis was competing against Kevin Anderson of South Africa in the final of the Mubadala World Championships, an exhibition tournament in Abu Dhabi.

He made his comeback at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi on Friday, but withdrew from his third-place play-off match to ensure he didn't push his body too far too soon.

The Wimbledon and US Open champion sets his eyes on Qatar Open that starts on Monday where he will take on Bosnia's Damir Dzumhur in his tournament opener.

Earlier in the day, Russia's Karen Khachanov won the third-place match 6-3, 4-6, 10-3 over Austrian Dominik Thiem, who stepped in for Nadal after the Spaniard chose to skip the contest to avoid aggravating an injury.

Khachanov, who lost to world No 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets in the semi-finals, felt spending time on court with two top 10 players had allowed him the chance to not only get his own game going again after the off-season, but also experience some variety on the other side of the net.

Nadal is now scheduled to kick off 2019 in Brisbane next week in preparation for the first Major of the year.

In the super tiebreak, Khachanov raced away to a 5-1 lead aided by a couple of unforced errors from Thiem and didn't face much resistance as he wrapped up the match in 10-3 in an hour and 24 minutes.

"OK, I played against Dominic twice and once against Novak", he said of his schedule.

"It was one of the best match points I have ever played", he said. "If you play bad, even if you are 11 or 35 you will not go deep you know".

"There's a new generation of players, Nadal and Federer are still there, [Andy] Murray and [Stan] Wawrinka are coming back, Zverev is the leader of this Next Gen", Djokovic said. "I can not thank enough the tournament organization for the understanding", Nadal said, adding that he aims to reach optimum form in time for the Australian Open, which begins on January 14. "The season just started for me, it was a goal to be here".

"Positive three days here", Khachanov said of how he had enjoyed his first time at the event at the International Tennis Stadium at Zayed Sports City.
