Russian Federation releases new launch footage of their 'Avangard' hypersonic missile

Russian President Vladimir Putin attended on Wednesday the launching of the new hypersonic missile Avangard, which will form part of the strategic forces of this nation, to destroy a simulated target in the Kamchatka peninsula.

The Defense Ministry released footage from the test launch, in which a ballistic missile could be seen blasting from a silo in a cloud of smoke, but it hasn't released any images of the vehicle itself.

During the flight, the missile made maneuvers in vertical and horizontal directions, according to the anticipated drawn trajectory, said the same source.

"The new Avangard system is invulnerable to current and promising air defense and missile defense systems of a potential enemy".

At the time he said Russian Federation had developed the weapons because of Washington's efforts to develop US missile-defense capabilities.

The test of Avangard comes amidst a new low in ties between the USA and Russia, caused by numerous reasons - President Donald Trump's intent to establish a permanent military base in Poland, the conflict in Ukraine, and new US sanctions against Russia in response to allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections.

Introducing the Avangard in March, Putin said the intercontinental-range missile travels at 20 times the speed of sound, enabling it to bypass rivals' missile defense systems.

A video released by the ministry showed only the first phase of the test, when the glider vehicle was contained within a UR-100N UTTKh missile (in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation terms, the SS-19 Stiletto). It's a big moment in the life of the armed forces and in the life of the country.

Putin unveiled the Avangard missile system, one of a variety of weapons Russian Federation developed to counter United States defenses, after former President George W. Bush withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 2002. China's DF-17 hypersonic glide vehicle is estimated by US intelligence agencies to see deployment by 2020.

Kofman wrote that even though the documentation Putin unveiled then proved nothing, there was no doubt that a real hypersonic boost-glide vehicle was being tested.

Russian Federation started the Avangard project in 2002, after the United States withdrew from the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty with the Soviet Union.
