Heather Nauert 'to replace Nikki Haley as United States envoy to UN'

US President Donald Trump has chose to name State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as the ambassador to the United Nations, a source familiar with his decision said on Thursday.

Heather Nauert whgo could be UN Envoy, did not immediately respond to request for comment.

She became the spokeswoman to the State Department in 2017. Officials at the White House at times viewed Haley with skepticism, in part over her willingness to publicly disagree with the president.

Nauert was formerly a co-host on morning cable news show "Fox & Friends" as well as a correspondent for CBS News.

"She's excellent, she's been with us a long time, she's been a supporter for a long time", he said at the time.

She would replace Nikki Haley, who announced that she was resigning in October. On October 9, Trump announced Haley had submitted her resignation and planned to leave the administration at the end of the year.

If confirmed, Ms Nauert's appointment could prove controversial given her apparent lack of foreign policy experience.

Nauert, who earlier this year had been considered a possible successor to White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders, gained experience on diplomacy by working at the State Department, but she lacks the political and policy credentials of Haley, a former SC governor. She joined her boss in calling out Iran and North Korea on numerous occasions.

Trump had previously said Nauert was under serious consideration to replace Haley, though he's been known to change course on staffing in the past.

Having the direct support of the president and Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, could buttress her image, however, among global diplomats at the United Nations, who have bristled at Donald Trump's "America First" foreign policy.

The president picked Nauert after considering other potential nominees including former White House aide Dina Powell, ambassador to Canada Kelly Craft and ambassador to Germany Ric Grenell.

Haley has been the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations for the entirety of Trump's presidency. With a master's degree from Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, she had come to Fox from ABC News, where she was a general assignment reporter.A graduate of Keith Country Day School in Rockford, Nauert is the daughter of the late Peter W. Nauert who led Pioneer Life Insurance Co. of IL.
