Trump Takes Jabs At 9th Circuit Court, House Dems During Turkey Pardon

Peas and Carrots, the two turkeys in the running to be pardoned by President Donald Trump on Tuesday, have been living in the height of luxury at the Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington, DC. They join last year's birds, Drumstick and Wishbone, who both received a pardon.

"They don't leave prison through Intake and Release, collect their belongings, and go home to their families", PETA says with a serious face.

While Americans have been sending turkeys to the White House since at least the 1870s, the turkey pardon as we know it was started by President George H.W. Bush. "That turkey is so lucky".

Both birds will be spared from a spot on the Thanksgiving dinner table.

"However, I have been informed by the White House counsel's office that Tater and Tot's pardons can not, under any circumstances, be revoked".

"I will be issuing both Peas and Carrots a presidential pardon; unfortunately I can't guarantee that your pardons will be enjoined by the ninth circuit", jested Trump during the ceremony.

As of Tuesday morning, the poll for a favorite turkey on the official White House account was tied 50-50 with just under 50,000 votes - certainly within the margin of error for a recount.

PETA uses the moment for some cheeky humor by suggesting the turkeys could theoretically be charged with drug crimes for all the "growth hormones and antibiotics that farms pump into these birds during the few short months of their lives".

"The victor of this vote was decided by a fair and open election conducted on the White House website", Trump said at the ceremony in the White House rose garden. Together, they are known as "The Presidential Flock". Trump also said Carrots demanded a recount but that was not going to happen. But in later years Coolidge gave in after the White House was flooded with Thanksgiving offerings of everything from turkeys and ducks to deer and even a live raccoon.

The turkey presentation ceremony is a tradition for American presidents, with the first ceremony taking place in 1947. He never said the bird was pardoned, though some newspaper reports did. "And we're still fighting with Carrots".

The presidential turkey pardoning ceremony also allows presidents to poke fun at themselves and their political opponents in a good-natured fashion.
