Despite Mainstream Comparisons, Clinton's Email Scandal Far Worse Than Ivanka's

Speaking on CNN, host John Berman suggested to Dean that such a plan was "the definition of Nixonian".

Trump told the then White House counsel, Don McGahn, in the spring of 2018 that he wanted a criminal investigation of Hillary Clinton over her use of a private email server while secretary of state, and against Comey alleging a leak of classified material, the Times said, citing two unnamed people familiar with the conversation.

Dean-who was sacked by Nixon during the Watergate scandal, plead guilty to obstruction of justice over his involvement and later become a key witness for the prosecution-told Berman: "If I had to channel a little of Richard Nixon, I think he'd tell this president he's going too far".

"This is the sort of stuff of a banana republic, this is what an autocrat does".

"If I had to channel a little of Richard Nixon, I think he'd tell this president he's going too far ... It looks like he won't back off until he's forced to".

The White House counsel, Donald McGahn, warned the president that he had no authority to order a prosecution and added that the move could lead to impeachment, the paper said. To underscore his point, Mr. McGahn had White House lawyers write a memo for Mr. Trump warning that if he asked law enforcement to investigate his rivals, he could face a range of consequences, including possible impeachment.

"We launched a bipartisan investigation past year into White House officials' use of private email accounts for official business, but the White House never gave us the information we requested", Cummings said in a statement to Fox News.

"This is really very, very heavy sledding".

Trump has said privately that that he would favor the appointment of a second special counsel to probe both Comey, the Federal Bureau of Investigation director he fired past year, and Clinton, the Democratic presidential nominee whom he beat in 2016.

It is unclear whether Mr. Trump read Mr. McGahn's memo or whether he pursued the prosecutions further. The President has been accused of hypocrisy, having repeatedly branded former Hillary Clinton "crooked" for her own use of a private email server - although there are several key differences.

Following the firing of Mr Sessions this month, Mr Whitaker was chosen to work as acting attorney general over Mr Rosenstein.
