Court Convicts Imelda Marcos of Graft, Orders Her Arrest

The graft cases, filed in 1991, stemmed from allegations that Marcos had financial stakes in at least seven foundations set up in Switzerland while she was a government minister and governor of metropolitan Manila from 1978 to 1986, and an MP from 1978 to 1984.

She was sentenced to prison for 6 years and 1 month to 11 years for each case.

Marcos, who is running for Ilocos Norte governor in the 2019 elections, was also perpetually disqualified from holding public office.

President Rodrigo Duterte, an ally of the Marcoses, said past year the Marcos family had indicated a willingness to return a still-unspecified amount of money and "a few gold bars" to help ease budget deficits.

Marcos can apply for bail while appealing the decision, CNN Philippines reports.

However, as Imelda is allowed to appeal to the Supreme Court, she can continue in her position as a member of the House of Representatives, whose mandate ends next year.

She said the court decision came at a time when the Marcos family was "desperately trying to revise history and clear their name of the crimes they committed".

The verdict from the anti-graft Sandiganbayan court orders her to serve a minimum of six years behind bars for each of the seven charges that the Marcoses funnelled roughly $200 million through Swiss foundations decades ago. Imelda Marcos was convicted on two counts of corruption in 1993, but the Philippine Supreme Court overturned both convictions.

Albayalde assured that Mrs. Marcos will be treated as a normal detainee if she will be taken to the PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

Ferdinand Marcos had placed the Philippines under martial rule a year before his term was to expire.

Marcos died in 1989 while still in exile.

The Marcos family is a close ally of Mr Duterte, a self-professed fan of the late dictator and his strongman ways.

A spokesman for the Philippine president indicated on Friday that Duterte will not intervene with the court on Imelda Marcos' behalf.

Former Senator Rene Saguisag also welcomed the decision of the anti-graft court.
