Banksy Pranks Auction House, Shreds $1 Million Artwork

UK-based artist Banksy arranged one of his well-known painting Girl With Balloon to self-destruct by shredding itself soon after it was auctioned for $1.4 million.

Later on Instagram Banksy has a video in which hooded man sets in picture frames Schroeder.

The quote, which he mistakenly (maybe?) attributed to Picasso actually comes from 19th-century Russian theorist of anarchism, Mikhail Bakunin.

Street artist Banksy, who has never revealed his identity, pulled off the biggest prank in auction history. "I'll be quite honest, we have not experienced this situation in the past, where a painting is spontaneously shredded upon achieving a record for the artist", Sotheby's Alex Branczik told The New York Times. The owner of the print reportedly cut the painting with a knife, and then requested the print be listed for auction at a minimum price of £80,000, the Daily Mail UK said.

The auction house insisted it didn't know anything about the stunt.

During the sale, the painting had been partially cut into thin slices by a chopper hidden in a thick golden frame, a few moments only after being sold. While the act may have been in protest of the art market and the exorbitant prices paid for works of art at auction, experts declare that the value of the piece will most likely increase as a result of the performance.

BanksyAccording to Wikipedia: "Banksy is an anonymous England-based street artist, vandal, political activist, and film director.[1] His satirical street art and subversive epigrams combine dark humour with graffiti executed in a distinctive stenciling technique". In 2006, he released an inflatable doll dressed as a Guantánamo Bay prisoner at Disneyland in California.

Cameras snapped, onlookers gasped, and auction room porters scrambled to remove the artwork from the wall, leaving shreds of the painting hanging from the bottom of the frame. His screen is visible and that angle is similar to one in footage in Banksy's video.
