Country braces itself for Storm Callum

Meanwhile, Met Eireann has issued an orange warning for gale-force winds of up to 80mph for all the coastal counties in the Republic of Ireland on Thursday and Friday.

THE Met Office has upgraded its weather warning for later this week, predicting that an incoming storm could bring deep flood water.

"This zone of heavy rain is expected to move slowly northwards on Saturday, with further yellow weather warnings in place".

A combination of winds up to 60 miles per hour and heavy rainfall are set to make driving conditions hazardous - including along the coast at times of high tides.

The weather warning has been issued for Dublin, Louth, Wexford, Wicklow, Meath, Cork, Waterford, Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry and will remain in place from 10pm tonight until 9am on Friday.

Heavy rainfall could present a risk to life, the Met Office said, as it issued a 36-hour amber warning for Wales.

"Some exposed locations could see as much as four inches by the end of Friday".

Winds of 50mph will batter Northern Ireland, southwest England and west Wales during Thursday night, spreading to Scotland by Friday morning. There is the risk of localised flooding, tricky conditions on the roads with surface water and spray. Expect the unexpected. Watch out for falling/fallen debris on the road and vehicles veering across the road. "Our various crews will be on stand by in relation to the potential flooding event on Friday morning".

High spring tides have already led to the closure of the Promenade earlier this week, and the strong winds due to hit overnight are expected to exacerbate the flooding problem.

"And for Wales and south-Wales in particular even more rainfall".

The country is bracing itself for Storm Callum today, while the National Emergency Coordination Group is set to meet this afternoon.

The county council is urging motorists to avoid all coastal roads, and to only make essential journeys.
