FBI Said to Lack White House Approval to Talk to Kavanaugh, Ford

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh testifies before the Senate.

Two other women also accuse Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct.

In particular, Democrats have homed in on his contention that the allegations against him are an "orchestrated political hit" funded by left-wing groups seeking "revenge on behalf of the Clintons".

To accommodate the senators, and to guard the sensitive information, the FBI's report is expected to be held in a secure room normally reserved only for classified matters.

The fast-moving story around embattled Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh continues to unfold.

Late Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell set a threshold vote for Friday on Kavanaugh's nomination, moving the Senate toward a potential confirmation roll call over the weekend.

West Virginia Sen. Shelley Moore Capito - like Ford, a graduate of the Holton-Arms School - has said she supports Kavanaugh.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a tweet that people can "decide who to believe" but everyone should stop the "personal attacks" against Ford, Kavanaugh and their families.

"Are you saying Judge Kavanaugh is the victim in all this?" President Trump said, role-playing a conversation between a son and mother. Their letter said, he "displayed a lack of judicial temperament that would be disqualifying for any court, and certainly for election to the highest court of the land".

Flake, an Arizona Republican, has played a key role in Kavanaugh's confirmation process.

U.S. President Donald Trump addresses supporters during a "Make America Great Again" rally in Southaven, Mississippi, Oct. 2, 2018.

In the meantime, some senators - including Republican Jeff Flake - criticized Trump for mocking Ford for laughs at a Tuesday night rally.

"His comments were just plain wrong", Maine's Susan Collins said Wednesday.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said he asked during a lunch meeting with other Republican senators if multiple copies could be made available, but it was unclear whether GOP leaders agreed to the request.

"As Rachel Mitchell said in her memorandum to members on the Senate Judiciary Committee, the allegations of Christine Ford do not even rise to the level of preponderance of evidence, which is one of the lowest standards in legal work that exists", he explains. 'How did you get there?' I don't remember. I don't remember. Where was the place? 'I don't know.' Upstairs, downstairs, where was it?

But at his rally on Tuesday, the president dismissively imitated Ford's appearance on Capitol Hill in an effort to cast doubt on her testimony.

President Donald Trump gave the Federal Bureau of Investigation a week to look into the matter and said publicly that the law enforcement agency had free rein.

As if the details of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's past behavior weren't already painful enough, on Monday night, the New York Times reported that he was once involved in a bar fight with a man he thought was the lead singer of that mostly white reggae band UB40 (of "Red Red Wine" fame). "It would - in effect - be appealing the Senate's verdict directly to the American people". - Twitter user @Dr_Dastardly, one of hundreds (thousands?) to tweet jokes about that "presidential alert " issued to smartphones across the United States Wednesday as a test of a Federal Emergency Management Agency system created to warn residents of national emergencies.
