President Donald Trump weighed in on the Brett Kavanaugh hearings Sunday night at a rally in West Virginia, taking specific aim at California Sen.

Mr Trump said it was a "very scary situation" to be "guilty until proven innocent".

"Somebody could accuse you of something, and you're automatically guilty", he said.

Ever since his brother's warning, Trump said, he has abstained from drinking and smoking because he had "somebody that guided me" in that aspect of life.

Five days after an extraordinary Senate hearing watched by millions of people in which university professor Christine Blasey Ford detailed her sexual assault allegation against Kavanaugh, Trump raised the issue of false accusations against men.

All three of them have said in written testimonies that they have no memory of the party at which Ford claims she was sexually assaulted by Kavanaugh.

Flake has said he will vote for Kavanaugh, while Murkowski and Collins have not announced what they'll do.

The primary season yielded record numbers of female candidates.

That means if all the Democrats vote against Kavanaugh, Trump could not afford to have more than one Republican oppose his nominee, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tie-breaking vote.

In his warning, Mr Trump echoed some of his allies. Kavanaugh has denied Ford's allegations. The Republican pointed to a leaked video from June, showing the senator telling supporters that she was "physically ill" when she got the news that Justice Anthony Kennedy was retiring. Or young men. Or middle-aged men.

Ford claims she can not remember how she got to or from the party where the assault allegedly happened. The race is one of the most contentious (and expensive) in the country for this year's midterm elections, seen as an opportunity for Republicans to grab a seat held by a vulnerable Democrat.

The audience laughed as Trump ran through a list of what he described as holes in Christine Blasey Ford's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

Speaking with reporters on the South Lawn at the White House, Trump also said he hopes the Senate will vote to confirm Kavanaugh by the end of the week but acknowledged it depends on the result of the ongoing investigation.

"That is a very, very hard standard", Trump told reporters on the South Lawn of the White House. "I had one beer", said Trump, channeling his version of Blasey. "There's been a lot of people over the a year ago that have lied to Congress", Trump said. "And this is the way that can do that", Zelizer said.

Republicans argue the Kavanaugh debate will drive enthusiasm among men and women. And 52pc of men believe Kavanagh has been treated unfairly, versus just 43pc of women. Is it any wonder that she was terrified to come forward, and that other sexual assault survivors are as well?

"This is another part of their moving the goal posts, which is happening at the speed of light at this point", said Carrie Severino, chief counsel for the Judicial Crisis Network, a conservative advocacy group.
