WELLINGTON, New Zealand-Dozens of passengers and crew have survived a plane's crash-landing in a Pacific lagoon.

An Air Niugini plane has overshot a runway in Micronesia and plunged into the sea, with all passengers and crew reported to be safe, according to airport officials.

Images shared on social media on Friday showed the plane Air Niugini plane, from Papua New Guinea (PNG), sitting in shallow water just off the coast.

In a brief statement, the airline said it could confirm that "all on board were able to safely evacuate the aircraft".

The accident took place at the Chuuk worldwide airport on the Weno island of the South Pacific nation of Micronesia. The flight is part of the airline's bi-weekly service between the Federated States Of Micronesia and Port Moresby.

"They immediately starting coming out in boats".

Some members of the crew and passengers on board have been taken to a local hospital for treatment and are undergoing checks, however there have been no reports of serious injuries thus far.

Passengers can be seen evacuating the submerged aircraft.

The airline said the plane, which was making a scheduled stop on its way from the Micronesian capital Pohnpei to Port Moresby, had "landed short of the runway".

"Right now we don't really know what happened".
