Intensifying Hurricane Florence targeting the Carolinas

Florence is so wide that a life-threatening storm surge was being pushed 300 miles ahead of its eye, swirling clouds that could deluge states from SC to OH and Pennsylvania as it slows and then stalls over land.

Henry McMaster (R) on Monday ordered a mandatory evacuation of the state's coastline ahead of Hurricane Florence's expected arrival on Thursday. Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas Tuesday and Wednesday, and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

"North Carolina is taking Hurricane Florence seriously and you should too", said Governor Cooper.

If the storm stalls, some areas could see feet of rain, especially if downpours focus over the higher terrain in western North Carolina and southwestern and central Virginia Authorities said such volume could cause flash floods, mudslides, and other unsafe conditions.

As of 11 a.m. EDT on Monday, Florence has been upgraded to a Category 4 storm. The statement is in effect until 8 p.m. tonight, but will likely be replaced by update statements over the next few days.

As coastal communities up and down the East Coast prepare for the worst this weekend from Hurricane Florence, Massachusetts need not join them in filling up sandbags and stocking up on bottled water.

The National Hurricane Centre has warned of "life-threatening" storm surges along the south-eastern seaboard and freshwater flooding due to a "prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall event".

But it's forecast to strengthen to near the level of a Category 5 storm - which has sustained winds of 157 miles per hour or more.

"All of the evidence points to an extreme disaster in the making in the mid-East Coast/Carolina region", said Bryan Norcross, a senior hurricane specialist with the Weather Channel.

"The centre of Hurricane Isaac was located near latitude 14.7 North, longitude 43.9 West. Isaac was moving towards the west near 14 miles per hour". Tropical storm force winds extend 150 miles from the center. Isaac became a tropical storm again approaching the Caribbean, while Hurricane Helene was veering northward, no threat to land. Any Category 3, 4 or 5 hurricane is classified as a major hurricane. "We are going to put everything else away and then we are going to put some concrete blocks in front of the doors just so rushing water and wind can't blow the doors back in", said Matthew Littleton with Casper's Marina.

It said that the storm, which was located at 775 miles east of the Lesser Antilles, had maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour.

As of Monday night, the president had not yet declared a state of emergency in Virginia, which is also expected to receive damaging rains and winds after the storm makes landfall.
