John McCain, senator and war hero, dies at 81

McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma back in July 2017. the same type of cancer that took the life of Senator Ted Kennedy back in 2009. He was 81 and had been battling brain cancer.

The decorated politician's family said they are "immensely grateful for the support and kindness of all his caregivers over the past year, and for the continuing outpouring of concern and affection from John's many friends and associates, and the many thousands of people who are keeping him in their prayers".

"In the year since (his diagnosis), John has surpassed expectations for his survival", the family said Friday. Earlier this week his family announced he was discontinuing treatment.

McCain's family thanked the caregivers who'd supported him and had shown him kindness, as well as the people who'd expressed their support and kept him in their prayers.

In a joint statement, the former USA leader and ex-secretary of state said: "Senator John McCain believed that every citizen has a responsibility to make something of the freedoms given by our constitution, and from his heroic service in the navy to his 35 years in Congress, he lived by his creed every day". After Trump's inauguration, McCain had embarked on a trip to over a dozen countries to reassure allies around the world.

"I understand the discipline and the things that go along about being a service person and protecting our freedoms", Edwards said.

"We dispirited our base and we let spending get completely out of control".

"I am able to celebrate a wonderful life and I will be grateful for additional time that I have", the senator said at the time.

But it would be another two years before McCain first emerged onto the national stage.

His daughter, Meghan McCain, said in a statement that "I was with my father at his end, as he was with me at my beginning".

Known as a "maverick" by some, the senator was often at odds with his own party.

After Trump's election, McCain continued to oppose Trump policies, such as the travel ban on citizens from several majority Muslim states, and voting against the USA president's attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act. The dramatic move shocked his fellow Republicans, who thought repeal was a done deal. "We don't need more bullying, and I'm exhausted of it!"

All living former USA presidents lined up to praise McCain's deep integrity.

McCain found Putin's growing influence on the world stage particularly worrisome. John McCain was a giant of our time not just for the things he achieved, but for who he was and what he fought for all his life.

He frequently criticized other Trump administration policies, including the decision to prosecute all those who illegally crossed the border to enter the USA - a policy which resulted in children being separated from their parents at the border. But he and running mate Sarah Palin lost to Obama.

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked said McCain was "one of Israel's biggest friends".

He ran for the Republican nomination but lost to George W. Bush. McCain said. "Merely preventing your political opponents from doing what they want isn't the most inspiring work".

McCain entered the Naval Academy in 1954, soon after graduating from a prep school in Alexandria, VA. He was captured in 1967 at a lake in Hanoi after his Navy jet was downed during the Vietnam war. McCain was shot down by a Surface-to-Air Missile and had broken both arms and his right knee upon ejection, losing consciousness until he hit the water.

McCain spent more than three decades in the Senate, looming large in debates over war and peace and the moral direction of the nation. He was refused medical treatment and beaten with a bayonet. He was a prisoner of war until his release in 1973.

He suffered, as the nation suffered, from the morass of Vietnam.

As he exited the market into a summer storm, McCain paused to notice a throng of people waiting in the rain to see him. He served in the Navy from 1958 until 1981, ending his career as a decorated captain with awards such as the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart.

He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1982 and the Senate in 1986.

McCain died after the deadline to file for this year's election, and as a result, the successor-senator would not have to face re-election until the 2020 election.
