Twitch Shifts Some Content To Ad-Supported Tier 08/22/2018

After re-evaluating Twitch Prime benefits, the company says it will begin displaying ads on September 14.

Advertising is an important source of support for the creators who make Twitch possible. "This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers doing what they love", the blog post states.

After that, viewers will have to subscribe to Twitch Turbo if they want an ad-free viewing experience. New Twitch Prime accounts made after that date will not have ad-free viewing.

For the record, other benefits included with Twitch Prime like monthly channel subs, monthly games and loot, and chat badges are not going away. It will be interesting to see whether Twitch Prime users will welcome this change, or if they will be vocally against it. The problem with how Amazon is the Twitch Prime changes is in how sudden it's coming to fruition for customers.

It's a little weird, especially considering that Twitch Prime used to give those streamers the revenue even though the ads weren't viewed. If you are a Twitch Prime member you are now able to go into any stream you want, whether you are subbed to that streamer or not, and go into it without having an ad greet you.

So what's the new incentive that's set to replace this 20 percent discount on game pre-orders? Effectively, the new pre-order benefits at both Best Buy and Amazon are less valuable and more limited than they were previously. However, if you pre-order (ed) games before August 28, the discount will still apply to them.

The popular tie-in model between Twitch and Amazon Prime will soon stop blocking ads for subscribers. The online retailer says Prime members will instead receive a $10 store credit for pre-orders on "select video games". "I'm considering ditching Prime altogether", one Reddit user wrote on the Twitch subreddit. But, it also allows Twitch to gain more advertisers by guaranteeing that their ads will be seen by a larger audience. However, the change will apply for new member beginning September 14.
