Southgate Not Satisfied Despite England’s Thrashing Of Panama

Sunday's qualification for the last 16 with a game to spare, Harry Kane leading the race for the Golden Boot and a record World Cup win after thrashing Panama 6-1 - England could not have wished for a better start in Russian Federation.

England's young and free-flowing team banished the ghost of past national failures with a record 6-1 thrashing of feeble Panama on Sunday (June 24) that included a hat-trick by Harry Kane and eased them into the last 16.

Kane now tops the scoring charts at the World Cup, one ahead of Manchester United's Romelu Lukaku and Real Madrid's Ronaldo following the latter's hattrick against Spain and single strike against Morocco. Both have four goals. "We wouldn't swap him for anyone in the tournament in terms of number nines". We knew there was going to be more goals and we showed that confidence to go and get them. He's very confident in his ability to convert chances.

Having added goals and assists to his game in 2017/18, Lingard is now a bona fide attacking threat who fully deserved his hug from manager Gareth Southgate when he came off with 30 minutes remaining.

Asked if his captain could hit the heights of a Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, Southgate said he had started "brilliantly" and praised him for staying mentally strong as he waited to take penalties while the Panamanian players argued. "He's there. He's up at the top".

"I didn't particularly like the performance! We had fun out there too", said Kane, calling his third "one of the luckiest goals of my life". With results elsewhere, finishing second could potentially open up an easier route to the semi-finals. I've heard talk of it being better finishing second, but how do you work all that out really?

Defender Yerry Mina opened the scoring in the 40th minute with captain Radamel Falcao and winger Juan Cuadrado sealing a deserved victory with two goals in five minutes as the desperate Poles chased the game in the last quarter. "We have got some decisions to make because the harmony of the group is important to me".

On the prospect of winning the Golden Boot, Kane said: "There's still a long way to go".

Again, the referee checked with VAR for offside, but once more the goal stood.

"I guess the bits in the middle were pretty good, but I am being hyper-critical", he said.

Baloy made history late on but it did not take the edge off a victory to cherish - just the third time the Three Lions had won their opening two World Cup games.
