Trump invokes ‘red wave’ as both parties see success in midterm primaries

Californians will choose between Democrat Gavin Newsom, left, and Republican John Cox to be the state's next governor.

Voters cast ballots in eight U.S. states for key primary elections on Tuesday, with all eyes on California, where the outcome could swing the balance of power in Congress. Democrats in the country's most populous state are battling to ensure they come out on top in several congressional districts that voted for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump in the 2016 presidential election.

Republicans did notch up one clear win on Tuesday night. Mr. Trump said on Twitter Wednesday morning.

If House Democrats win a majority in President Donald Trump's midterm test this fall, it will be because they were able to turn key New Jersey districts from red to blue.

Voters in seven other states went to the polls as well. But so far neither party appears to have suffered any major setbacks. And the winners and losers in California's most competitive races could take days to sort out given the state's unique election laws.

California has some of the highest gas prices in the nation, and the tax, which went in to effect a year ago, is a rare issue in California that seems to bring Democrats and Republicans together.

Voters picked final candidates in races in Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota and California on Tuesday.

Ivey, who stepped into the governor post after the resignation of Robert Bentley previous year, will seek a full term in November. Baugh's campaign threatened to draw enough disaffected Republicans to keep any Democrat from appearing on the ballot in November.

California was among eight states holding primary contests on Tuesday. If the Democrats are going to take back the House, which now appears unlikely, it will be in swing states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and NY.

Much of Tuesday's drama focused on women, including former federal prosecutor and Navy pilot Mikie Sherrill, who bested a field of Democratic rivals to replace retiring New Jersey Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen. Her Republican opponent in the July runoff is a former Democrat-turned-Trump ally Bobby Bright.

Roby was the first member of Congress to withdraw her endorsement of the Republican president in 2016 after he was caught on video bragging about grabbing women's genitals.

It may be as close to good as the state's second biggest political party can hope for in California in 2018.

Senator Roger Wicker, Republican of MS, won his primary contest as did Senator Bob Menendez, Democrat of New Jersey.

Incumbent Republican Gov. Kay Ivey won her primary with 56 percent support, easily beating Huntsville, Ala., Mayor Tommy Battle, who finished a distant second with 25 percent. The race for second in the primary for U.S. Senate was neck-and-neck between Republican James Bradley and State Sen.

In New Jersey's 7th District, won by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, Republican incumbent Leonard Lance will face a tough general election against former Obama staffer Tom Malinowski. Such a candidate would at least have made for a heck of race.

Incumbent Democrat Sen. Robert Menendez, indicted in 2015 on corruption charges that were dismissed earlier this year, won his party's primary with 62 percent, beating challenger Lisa McCormick, a political newbie who won 38 percent.

Democrats targeted seven congressional districts won by Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election that are now held by Republicans. Fox News even salivated over the possibility of two Republicans running against each other in California. This indicates to me that de Leon is going to have a tough time expanding his base of supporters moving forward to the general election.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well. "A lot of us felt it was necessary to take a seat at the table".

The governor's race was one of many drawing attention to California.
