Texas school shooting suspect's father thinks he was bullied

Gov. Greg Abbott announced Monday he will be hosting a series of roundtable discussions at the Texas Capitol focused on school safety and security following the shooting at Santa Fe High School.

If you want to understand why the idea of any sort of major - or, really, minor - change in gun laws in the wake of yet another school shooting is a pipe dream, all you needed to do is listen to Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick. That incident intensified a long-running national debate about gun rights and sparked a student-led movement under the slogan #NeverAgain.

All schools in Santa Fe will be closed today and tomorrow, officials said.

In April 2007, a senior at the university committed the deadliest school shooting in modern USA history, killing 32 people and injuring 17 others in two separate attacks on campus - one in a co-ed dormitory and the other in the Engineering, Science and Mechanics building.

Texas governor Jim Abbott, a Republican, said Pagourtzis obtained the firearms from his father, who had likely acquired them legally.

"All I hear is talk".

"Abbott's decision to continue the raffle was disrespectful to the Santa Fe community", the group said on Twitter. "We need gun control, and legislation".

According to authorities, 17-year-old Dimitrios Pagourtzis, a student at Santa Fe High School, was arrested following the shooting and has been booked on a capital murder charge, ABC 13 reported.

Roady said Texas law allows for the death penalty in capital murder cases, but he said he will not seek death for Pagourtzis because he is a minor; the Supreme Court has ruled that minors are not eligible to face capital punishment.

American football player JJ Watt, who plays for the Houston Texans, has offered to pay for the funerals of the eight students and two teachers killed.

Rome Shubert's mother, Sheri, told Good Morning America on Monday that she had expected her son's suburban Houston school would eventually fall victim to a shooter. Advocates for and against stricter gun regulations said they were asked to attend Wednesday. And then, before Friday even ended, there was another shooting at a Georgia school.

Mr Abbott also said Pagourtzis wanted to commit suicide, citing the suspect's journals, but did not have the courage to do so.

Trochesset said his daughter was in a classroom three doors away from where Pagourtzis was taken into custody.

Experts testing some of the Carbon dioxide canisters that were found by authorities at the high school and inside the teen's home determined that some of the bombs were functional, officials said. Finally, about a week ago, she stood up to him in the middle of class to proclaim she would not go out with him.

The teenager was surrounded by dozens of television cameras, photographers and reporters, as she shook her governor's hand and said she didn't believe guns were to blame for the shooting she survived.

Shana's mom, Sadie Baze, told local CBS affiliate KENS5 that she believed her her daughter was the first person targeted, and that in the days before the school shooting took place, discussed the possibility of it happening with her mom.
